About Breadonabike

BREAD ON A BIKE is a sourdough micro bakery based in Cambridge, launched in January 2013, baking hand crafted loaves using the highest quality organic ingredients. I bake to order for anyone who wants freshly baked, naturally leavened, slowly fermented bread. You can collect your bread from Cavendish Road, CB1 (off Mill Road), by arrangement. As you can see from the name, for a long time I was delivering all my loaves by bike but deliveries are only available for wholesale orders for the time being.

I bake sourdough bread in my home kitchen and fresh bread is available for individual customers on Wednesdays and Fridays. If you want to make wholesale orders or have any specific requests for bread products outside of these times please get in touch.

I learned how to make sourdough bread from one of my bread heroes, Andrew Whitley. In 2011 and 2012, each weekend for 18 months, I had the amazing opportunity of working with Ben McKinnon at the E5 Bakehouse in Hackney and also spent a month working at the Handmade Bakery, a co-operative bakery in Slaithwaite in West Yorkshire. I started baking for a few people I worked with shortly before I was made redundant from my job in nutrition research in January 2013. When I left work, the friends I was supplying didn’t want to stop having their bread, and so I carried on baking and cycling around delivering it! Since then 8 work colleagues and friends has increased to over 800 customers (end of 2016) simply by word of mouth. It is wonderful to know how many people there are out there who appreciate ‘real’ bread!

Hello! Yesterday I tasted your Rye bread at Espresso Library and I was impressed! One of the best sourdough I’ve ever had! Can’t wait to eat more! Well done 🙂

    1. Thanks for your feedback Nina, really glad you enjoyed it….do you want me to add your details to my e-mailing list for bread orders?

  4. Just tried your fig and toasted sunflower seed loaf – we had a couple left after catering for CCF on Mon 5th and I popped one in the freezer – it is utterly absolutely amazing, even after being frozen – Horseheath is a bit far to cycle but would love to pop by and pick some up.

  5. Hello whereabouts in Cambridge is your bread available? Hotels or pubs or any restaurants?

    1. Hello Bee,
Apologies I have only just seen your comment, I don’t seem to be receiving notifications.
I supply certain cafes and restaurants, such as Cotto at the Gonville Hotel and make bagels for Urban Larder on Mill Road, Otherwise I bake to order Thursday & Friday and it is collected from CB1. Email me if you would like to be added to the mailing list to know what bread is available.
      Thanks,
      Alison

Wow sounds like a great business. I have started doing something very similar with sourdough bread and baguettes. My customer base is still small, but I am trying to go though all the legal paperwork and was wondering what type of hurdles you had to go over when starting out (tax and legal expenses). Hope you don’t mind me asking just seems like you are a very similar concept and company to my own.

    1. If you have questions do contact me at breadonabike@gmail.com as it is easier to reply than in this format. Thank you,
